# **Robin Odenkirchen:**

### “I love getting involved in the technical side of products and systems that contribute to a more sustainable world.”

## From intern to R&D Engineer: Robin's story

At just 30, Robin Odenkirchen has already built an impressive career at Van der Valk Systemen. What began with an internship as a Project Draftsman in Horticulture & Solar has developed into a varied role as a Research & Development Engineer. He has now been part of the company for ten years, three of which have been spent in the R&D department. But what does his work involve, and what keeps him enjoying his job day after day? Robin shares his story.

## A varied role: no two days are the same

In the R&D department, no two days are the same, and everything revolves around progress. “We develop new products for customers in Horti, Solar and Building, but we also improve existing systems,” Robin explains. His working day usually starts with a cup of coffee and a review of ongoing projects. “With several projects running at the same time, my work is very varied. Some are still in the concept phase, while others are almost complete.”

From creating 3D drawings and testing concepts to consulting with suppliers and building demo setups, Robin’s role covers a wide range of tasks. “The great thing is that you get to work with both your head and your hands,” he says. “That makes the work challenging and enjoyable.”

## From idea to finished product

One of the projects Robin is most proud of is the development of a carport called ValkTop. “At the time, we had limited knowledge of this area, so we started with extensive research,” he explains. “After working through numerous concepts, meetings and tests, the design was ready. The first project was completed in Groningen in September 2025. Seeing the finished product installed after two years of development was really exciting. I’m proud of what we achieved!”

However, the work is never truly ‘finished’. The market is constantly evolving, which means there’s always room for improvement. “We’re continually developing and refining our products,” Robin says. “For example, by adding extra features based on feedback, as well as responding to requests from the market. That makes the work not only challenging, but relevant too.”

## A great working atmosphere and opportunities to grow

According to Robin, the reason he still looks forward to going to work every day is simple: “You get to work on innovative projects that contribute to a more sustainable world. And you do so as part of a team and a company where collaboration and enjoyment are at the heart of everything. For me, that’s the perfect combination.”

His own career progression within the company also highlights the opportunities for development that Van der Valk Systemen offers. “You’re given the freedom and trust to develop yourself and take exciting steps forward in your career. All of this is why I’ve enjoyed coming to work for the past nine years.”
